FEDERAL  ASTRAGAL-END  WORK  TABLE
Mid-Atlantic States
Circa 1805 -1815

This rich mahogany astragal-end work table lends itself to a delicate form with a very masculine flare.  These features are indicative of the work of a trained cabinetmaker.

The reeded edged lid is hinged an lifts to reveal an adjustable writing flap, pen tray and other shallow compartments.  Candle slides flank the top of its astragal sides.  They serve a dual purpose on the table.  When pushed in they provide covers for deep end compartments of the table.  When extended, they offer a place for a light that does not interfere with the opening of the hinged top.  Centering the body is a shallow drawer ornamented with cockbeading, as well as, all around the skirt of the tables astragal form.  All this is above the unusual forward Aflaring@ curving legs.  These legs and the reeding on the edge of the top were offered as an Aextra@ for oval work tables in The New York Book of Prices for Cabinet and Chair Work of 1802 - page 26.
