Pair Slat Back Side Chairs
Philadelphia
Circa 1780-1800
The Chippendale period from 1780-1800 adapted the use of slates or horizontal members which replaced the vertical pierced splats of earlier Chippendale chairs.
A fine handsome and sophisticated pair of chairs, which seem to have been made exclusively in the Philadelphia area. The chairs have round shoulders, stretchers, straight legs with beaded edge and slip seats with straight seat fronts. The side rails are tenoned through the back legs in the normal manner of Philadelphia chair making.
