BLANKET CHEST
Schoharie Co., New York
Circa 1823 dated
In Schoharie Co., New York, some highly interesting blanket chests were made in the first quarter of the 1800's. This dated chest is one. It is painted with a dark green ground. Yellow is the primary accent color of all its free-hand decorations. The typical variety of decorative designs are vines with flowers, as well as, the Loral Wreath surrounding initials and 1823 date. The pinwheel decorations on the side panels and front bracket feet are more unusual. Its interesting to compare the pinwheel decoration with those made by the Pennsylvania Germans. In the early 1700's Germans had settled in upper NYS. Therefore, the pinwheel decoration resembles to some extent examples used in Pennsylvania.
This Fine Example Blanket Chest is in a desired state of preservation with its decorative designs untouched on a seasoned surface.
