PORTRAIT of a BOY
American
Circa 1845
A Handsome portrait with a pleasing combination of rounded forms. The colors were applied and molded to give an overall soft effect of the boy's head and upper torso which are placed on a dark background.
The artist included a personnel association with the life of the subject. The boy wears a darker blue coat with small brass buttons (poss. military) and holds daises in his hand.
Typical of Folk Painters, this artist has an unrealistic handling of anatomy and perspective. The artist likeness of the boy illustrates the modest yet successful achievement and created a simpler technique that suited his or her abilities and ambitions.
