FEDERAL LIBRARY TABLE
New York City, Circa 1815
Attributed to DUNCAN PHYFE
The refined Federal Spirit is captured in the development of
this Excellent Quality Table. The table's top with hinged leaves are veneered with an opulent grained mahogany. Below is a single drawer with a corresponding false drawer each with double brass string inlays highlighting the skirt. This is over trumpet shaped supports which are reeded in perfect relationship to the cross stretcher. The hocked knees featuring deep water leaf carvings on all four reeded down-curving feet which end to fancy molded brass caps with casters. To conclude, the table's fine original condition is also an important part of its Outstanding Quality.
The base of this table is directly related to that on a card table made by Duncan Phyfe for John Jacob Astor. The table is illustrated in Nancy McClelland's, Duncan Phyfe and English Regency, Page 252 - Plate 239.
